We came across this quote while reading a recent speech by Hillary Clinton:
“The moment someone breaks through in one place, when one person cries out, ‘The emperor is naked!’—when a single person breaks the rules of the game, thus exposing it as a game—everything suddenly appears in another light.” – Vaclav Havel, The Power of the Powerless.
Read this quote in the context of our current Filipino experience and you may get this: when one person breaks through the smoke and mirrors of Duterte’s deception and questions his actions, then he, as emperor, is naked. He uses government forces, communications, and terrorists to cloak his plans of authoritarian rule so, when he feels too weak to continue, cede his power to those we booted out years ago.
It is our duty as Filipinos to keep our freedoms intact, to resist martial law. To those who think martial rule will keep them safe, you are living in a fantasy world. There is no such thing as being safe under despotic rule. We are all vulnerable, at risk. Think of your future, our country’s future.
